Description

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies is increasing electricity demand, creating new energy challenges for developing countries such as South Africa. This study examines how rising AI-driven economic activities, data centres, digital infrastructure, and industrial automation may intensify pressure on South Africa’s already constrained energy system. It explores opportunities for addressing these challenges through renewable energy integration, energy-efficient technologies, smart grids, energy storage, and improved electricity-sector planning. The study further considers the economic, technological, and policy measures required to ensure that increasing energy demand supports inclusive economic development without worsening energy insecurity or environmental pressures. Ultimately, the research highlights the need for coordinated energy and digital-development strategies to build a reliable, sustainable, and resilient energy system capable of supporting an AI-driven economy.
